Volume Four - An Era of Change, Uncertainty, Depression & War - Our family at war . . .

1941 - Luftwaffe map and photo image of Cardiff Docklands issued to bomber crews to identify infrastructure targets.

My eldest brother, Peter recollects in his memoirs [040] that as children we all lived close by the Dowlais (East Moors) iron and steelworks at number 73 Coveny Street in the heart of the Splott area of Cardiff just north of Luftwaffe map and nearby “Tiger Bay”, Adeline Street being the home of Dame Shirley Bassey! The dust and fume from the works was apparently horrendous. The area was also heavily bombed thanks to Herr Hitler; in 1941 it was reported that 300 bombs and numerous incendiaries fell on the docks. Our father, Albert often worked the second shift supporting the docks police and fire wardens on fire watch at the docks. I missed out on all that excitement by a few years!

1945 - loses to shipping in and around Cardiff Docks.
