Volume Four - An Era of Change, Uncertainty, Depression & War - The Penarth Dock Engineering Company Limited . . .

A 1949 or 1950 aerial view of the meandering estuary of the River Ely, Basin and Dock. The pontoon was gone by the start of my apprenticeship to the company in 1966 and the operation had been adapted to general and precision engineering working mainly within the local coal, steel and power generation industries.

The company changed name again to the Penarth Dock Engineering (1977) Limited with a registered address at Alexandra Dock, Newport, Gwent (Incorporation date 09/01/1975) but wasn't dissolved until February 2007 when it had a book value of £69.54 and somewhat surprisingly also had liabilities of £69.54. It was previously known, as at 31st December 1977, as the Cardiff Landsea Engineering Co. Limited.

A Glimpse Inside the Works c.1962 - The following images were gratefully provided by Mr. Richard Weeks M.B.E. who worked at the company with his older brother Michael, they being the sons of the MD and Chairman of the Company; Julie was the personal assistant to their father, Mr. A. H. Weeks.

A group of apprentices with Mr. Ted Smith in c.1961 and an image of the apprentices a few years later when I was there.
