I thought it approriate to include a selection of the images from the report since they add to the construction details and provide a insight to the condition of our lost engineering and social heritage after 76 years service and a further 25 years of flooding (to 1991).

Since then, the subway to my best knowledge has remained flooded. The report of 1991 commented that should the subway be abandoned, then the recommendations of the report included the following items;

(i) to demolish the toll house on the northern side,

(ii) to remove 90 rings from the same side (41m) to ensure that the structure does not project above the proposed development level,

(iii) to locate the abandoned southern end of the subway and cap it off properly and,

(iv) to install manholes at each end of the remaining subway to enable access to present or future services and that the subway be retained as a service tunnel.
