1.0 - Introduction

This document represents a detailed examination of the construction history of Penarth Dock and pays particular attention to the structure of the walls and the sluicing arrangements at both the sea entrance and the lock.

The document is divided into five main sections of which this is the first. The remaining four sections deal with the construction history of the dock, the structure of the dock walls, sluicing arrangements and sources used in the preparation of the document. These sections are supplemented by a number of appendices all of which are referenced within the text.

This section is intended to provide some background information which attempts to clarify the contents of the document and the way in which it has been prepared. It includes a brief comment on the type of sources used to prepare the document, provides a short discussion on the accuracy of the information contained in the document, explains how the illustrations were reproduced and finally gives some terms of reference for the document.
